Overmolding

Plastic Ove-molding, also known as multiple material molding is a type of plastic injection molding where a rubber or elastomer such as TPU or TPE is permanently over-molded onto a more rigid plastic substrate. We also can mold one rigid material over another rigid material just to get a two-tone effect.

Plastic over-molding is using a normal single nozzle injection molding machine to produce two different types of plastic parts or two different colors of plastic parts in one part. The over-molding process is getting out of the first part (substrate part) from one mold, then putting it into the subsequent/2nd mold to be over-molded for a finished component. Over-molding can be used to add a soft-touch grip to a tool handle or to create a product with multiple colors or textures.

Insert Molding

Insert Molding means to place one component – the insert onto a pin or other holding fixture inside of a plastic injection molding tool. When the mold closes, thermoplastic resin is then molded around the insert, permanently sealing it into place.

The insert is usually a small metal or plastic piece like a threaded screw fitting or an electrical contract. Using inserts in this way, specially for screw fittings, avoids the need for extra drilling and tapping which takes extra time and money. And inserts can also be used on thin-wall cases that otherwise wouldn’t be thick enough to allow for a tapped hole
